Soul Contracts
That’s a photo of me and my best friend Jane, taken in a photo booth at Union Station in Los Angeles. We’d cut school. We were seventeen. She was half-Irish, half-Jewish, and had a moral compass pointed due north. I adored her.
What I didn’t know then, and what I only understood decades later, after thousands of hours of past-life regression hypnotherapy, was that Jane and I had been here before. In my most recent past life, she was my wife.
This is a blog about soul groups. About the people we keep meeting, lifetime after lifetime. And about why the person who gives you the most trouble might be your most important teacher.
You’ve Probably Met Before
Dr. Michael Newton, the pioneering hypnotherapist and author of Journey of Souls and Destiny of Souls, spent decades regressing thousands of clients into the time between lives. What he found, consistently, was that we don’t travel alone. We seem to move through lifetimes with roughly the same group of souls, perhaps 200 of them, playing different roles in each incarnation. Lovers become children. Enemies become spouses. The soul who broke your heart in one century might be your most devoted friend in the next.
My own teacher, Dr. Brian Weiss, a psychiatrist and author of Many Lives, Many Masters, came to the same conclusion from a completely different starting point—clinical psychiatry. What both men found, independently, was that our most significant relationships aren’t random. They’re assignments.
My Own Assignment
In my most recent past life, I was a wealthy, entitled Jewish doctor in Germany, probably born in the 1880s. I came from a prominent family. I had money, connections, and the absolute certainty that I was protected by all of it.
In that lifetime, my best friend, Jane, was my wife. My best friend Lynn, whom I met at Disney in 1991, was my daughter.
And the man who caused me the most damage in this lifetime? In that past life, he was a beautiful German showgirl, think Liza Minnelli in Cabaret, but blonde. She was sleeping with SS officers. And when Hitler’s plans for Germany’s Jewish population were in full swing, and I was quietly arranging to move my family to Paris and then New York, she outed me.
German citizens who exposed Jews attempting to escape were rewarded with their property.
I died in Auschwitz. Furious. My money didn’t save me. My god didn’t save me. Angry at the world.
When that same soul found me again in this lifetime, he arrived as a charming, handsome young man, just 27 years old to my 64. And he targeted me, and I got hooked. Not because I was naive, but because the soul recognizes what the conscious mind doesn’t yet understand. We had unfinished business.
The lesson I came back to learn? Forgiveness. Complete, unconditional forgiveness. Not for his sake. For mine. (Oh, and forgiving doesn’t mean that you have to accept bad behavior or have anything to do with psychopaths!)
Because here’s what I know after more than 25 years of this work: never die angry. If you leave a lifetime consumed by rage and blame, you will carry that unfinished business straight into the next one.
The Client Who Saw Herself Clearly — And Still Isn’t Ready
Last week, I regressed a lovely woman born into a wealthy Brazilian family, who had spent years supporting a handsome Argentinian husband who never worked. At the same time, she raised their two sons alone.
Under hypnosis, she found herself in 16th-century Spain. She was a fat, powerful, abusive landowner. Entitled. Cruel. Particularly cruel to his wife.
When I said “find your wife,” she gasped.
It was José. Her husband in this lifetime.
The tables had completely turned over five centuries. She was shown clearly that her assignment in this life was to develop compassion and forgive him.
She hasn’t done it yet.
You can lead a horse to water.
But she saw it. And seeing it is always the beginning.
It’s Probably Not Your Twin Flame
Clients come to me constantly asking whether someone is their twin flame. I understand the appeal of that idea — the notion that there’s one perfect soul out there, your other half, destined for you.
But in my experience? The person you’re calling your twin flame is more likely an old soul contract. Maybe an old enemy. Maybe someone who wronged you, or whom you wronged, and neither of you is finished yet.
That’s actually better news than it sounds. Because contracts can be completed, debts can be paid. Anger can be released. And when they are, you stop dragging that particular weight into the next lifetime.
The people who challenge you most aren’t accidents. They’re assignments.
The question your soul is really asking isn’t “why is this happening to me?”
It’s “what did I come back here to learn?”
