Want 20/20 Vision Into Your Future?
“Where there is no vision, the people perish.” That quote from the King James Bible screamed out from a vast ‘30s era Russian inspired poster for “Vision ’91,” the student film festival at UCLA Film School. I was a third-year graduate student in screenwriting then, and I was so proud. I’d won The Women in Film Award, The Harmony Gold Award, The Jack Nicolson Award, The Paramount Award and I was about to win the Disney Fellowship and go off to work at Touchstone for a full year.
How did that happen? I visualized winning awards with a bunch of fellow film students. So the “all that is” knew that I wanted to win awards. (Also, I worked my butt off, and I’m a good writer!) I also hosted a monthly Goddess Group where I encouraged all my fellow goddesses to visualize a time either three years, ten years or more of a specific day in their life. And then we went out to Malibu, and under a bright full moon, we all described what we would be doing in three years, down to the smell of coffee in the morning. And everyone visualized it together – it was powerful! The results we all got were stunning!
But you don’t need a full moon or a group of friends to visualize. You can do it on your own.
How? First, decide what you want for yourself in three years. (That’s not an easy as it sounds.) Where do you want to live? Think of your job, financial situation, relationship, social life, etc. Ask yourself, “What would make me happy?” Daydream. Allow yourself to picture a life that is loving and nurturing to you.
Then do the “If & Then” exercise that I give to my clients. Get out a notebook, yes, one that you can write on with a pen, not your phone. (The muscles in your arm attach to your brain.)
Open it, so you’re looking at two blank sheets. On the left, write the date that is three years from today. On the right-hand side, you’ll write down today’s date.
Then become the future self you want to be, and describe your day from that perspective. For instance, my own future self always begins with: “I wake up in a strong, pain-free body filled with enthusiasm and gratitude.”
So look at the first sentence you wrote, and “If that is true,” then on the right side, you write down what you need to do today to make that happen. What are the actions you’ll need to take to make that a reality? It’s not “airy-fairy,” it’s actually neuroscience in action. As you visualize your future, you’re more apt to believe in it, and because of that, you’ll do what it takes to get to where you want to go. Easy, right? Just know you need to create new habits, new neuropathways that link to what you want!
So have 20/20 Vision in 2020!! Link to your future! Believe in your own ability to create a life filled with love and opportunity!
